GTA 6: Is the launch trailer a graphics downgrade? The debate explained

Does GTA 6 look worse in the launch trailer? We examine criticism of blur, bloom and lighting, and explain what the comparisons actually show.

The new GTA 6 trailer has prompted excitement and a fundamental debate about its graphics. Since Rockstar released the launch trailer on 15 October, fans have been comparing it with Trailer 2, the Extended Look and official screenshots. Some find the new footage blurrier and less impressive. Others mainly see a different lighting mood. How much substance is there to the downgrade claims?

What sparked the criticism

Three impressions dominate: a softer image, a stronger yellow tint and conspicuous glare in bright areas. In a discussion on r/GTA6, the original poster describes Trailer 2 as sharper and more colourful. They also dislike what they consider excessive background blur in the launch trailer.

Not every critic thinks GTA 6 looks bad overall. Some like the new scenes but prefer the clearer look of earlier footage. That distinction is easily lost among pointed downgrade comments.

The accusation has spread beyond Reddit. Hobby Consolas reports on an X post by streamer Mehdi Vibes, who compares the trailer with earlier material and suspects a visual step backwards. The publication focuses particularly on a comparison between Lucia in the car and an official image. This documents criticism, but does not establish a technical reduction.

Why other fans disagree

Under a side-by-side comparison of a road sequence from Trailer 2 and the launch trailer, explanations clash. Some users complain about a lack of clarity. Others point to different times of day and weather conditions, or suspect a deliberately cinematic presentation.

There are also explicitly positive reactions. Another thread praises wet hair rendering and the lighting. Even there, some users find the overall image too soft. The debate therefore cannot neatly be divided into excited fans and disappointed critics. Individual details can impress while the overall image remains less appealing.

What bloom and blur actually tell us

Bloom gives bright light sources and reflective surfaces a halo. Depth of field blurs areas in front of or behind the focus plane. Both effects can make an image appear softer even when the underlying objects remain detailed. Colour grading also changes a scene’s mood.

These general principles explain why ‘looks blurrier’ and ‘contains less graphical detail’ are different statements. They do not diagnose GTA 6: Rockstar’s settings for these shots, and where an effect originates, remain unknown. The linked developer documentation describes general techniques rather than proving which technology Rockstar uses.

Is video quality to blame?

Playback conditions also matter. YouTube notes that high-resolution versions can take extra processing time after upload. Browsers and devices can also affect available quality settings and colour reproduction. A video watched early may therefore not be playing under the same conditions as a later comparison.

Whether this explains the differences discussed here would need checking against the particular material. Without that check, ‘it’s just YouTube’ is as premature as claiming Rockstar downgraded the graphics. A fair assessment should use the highest-quality official versions and match playback conditions as closely as possible.

Which rumours go too far

Another Reddit thread even suggests the softer image might be linked to a different console. Such claims remain speculation. Video blur cannot reliably identify the hardware used or tell us which graphics modes the finished game will offer.

Hopes for a much sharper PC version later do not answer the current question either. Without corresponding information about that version, these are expectations rather than guaranteed improvements.

What a reliable comparison would need

To establish a technical downgrade, comparisons should examine the same scene under similar conditions: camera position, distance, time of day, weather and source-file quality. Only then could we assess whether object detail, shadows or distant vegetation were actually reduced. Putting a close-up next to a moving wide shot is not enough.

This is not a request to defend the new look. Anyone who prefers less glare and a sharper image can already criticise it. A proven technical regression is not required for that opinion.

Our assessment

The debate reflects understandable dissatisfaction with the appearance of individual shots. It does not currently establish a graphics downgrade in GTA 6. Lighting, artistic choices and video processing are plausible explanations, but their actual contribution remains unclear.

It would also be premature to dismiss every difference as a filter. Comparable footage, and ultimately the playable release, will matter. Until then, the distinction between ‘I like this trailer less’ and ‘the game has been technically downgraded’ remains central to the discussion.
